Rosen Hotels Improves Protection for 25,000 Users

How Cisco security solutions protect thousands of users daily at our Florida-based hospitality company.

Total network visibility starts here.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts uses a suite of security solutions to gain visibility into the company’s network and reduce complexity.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts

Rosen Hotels & Resorts operates seven hotels, a medical center, two preschools, and a fitness and aquatic center. It manages network traffic for over 25,000 users.

Challenge

The IT team at Rosen Hotels & Resorts was using disparate tools and solutions to manage company network access. These tools left gaps that were vulnerable to attacks and exposed resources to unnecessary risks. The team faced major issues such as:

  • Lack of visibility into network traffic
  • Inability to segment the network
  • Limited means of integrating the solutions with other tools
  • No visibility into user behavior

Solution

The IT team at Rosen implemented four Cisco solutions that easily integrated with the organization’s existing infrastructure: Cisco Secure Firewall, Cisco Umbrella, Cisco Secure Email Threat Defense, and Cisco Duo. These upgrades resulted in:

  • Cisco Umbrella is a cloud-delivered security solution that provides users with a first line of defense against cybersecurity threats.
  • Cisco Secure Firewall makes a zero-trust posture achievable and cost-effective with network, micro-segmentation, and app security integrations.
  • Cisco Secure Email Threat Defense safeguards inboxes with comprehensive defense against the most damaging threats.
  • Cisco Duo provides frictionless access with strong Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), enabling secure access to apps and visibility into devices.

Outcomes

Reduced Burden on IT Teams

When the company suffered a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, the team used Duo to stop the attack before it could spread across the network.

Enhanced Visibility

With the expanded visibility, the team could prevent malicious email attachments from reaching users.

Total network visibility starts here.

Rosen Hotels & Resorts was growing quickly. Its IT team realized they needed more than disparate tools to adequately monitor network traffic, proactively defend against threats, and protect sensitive resources.

“We were having real issues with people connecting to the network and no visibility into what traffic was going through,” said Rosen Hotels & Resorts Director of IT Infrastructure Manny Simancas.

Moreover, the company was dealing with ongoing email security risks, particularly with attachments and phishing emails. The IT team was concerned about malicious attachments sent to their employees that could lead to malware and other security concerns.

After an extensive search of available tools and solutions across the market, Simancas and his team decided to try Cisco Secure Firewall with the hope of simplifying their security one step at a time.

When the IT team implemented Cisco Secure Firewall, they quickly realized what an upgrade it was. The team was now getting insights into network traffic, which was absent with previous tools. They also implemented Cisco Secure Email Threat Defense for added security. The team soon discovered it offered a much-needed ability to take proactive measures against potential threats targeting users, such as opening phishing emails and malicious attachments.

“When we moved away from [third-party tools], we saw a huge benefit to downtime, flexibility, and much more,” Simancas said.

The IT team then added Cisco Umbrella to expand protection across the network for users and their devices when logging in remotely. Umbrella blocked malicious websites and enabled users to safely access the internet from anywhere—a major benefit.

“Umbrella was a great solution for our company in protecting the end user,” Simancas said. “Minimizing downtime has been such a huge benefit for Rosen Hotels.”

Finally, the team added Cisco Duo specifically for remote application access. This strengthened network visibility. It lets administrators see who’s logging into the network, from where, and from which device.

“When we started using Duo for remote application access, it made a massive impact on visibility,” Simancas said. “Now, we know who’s trying to access which applications on our network.”

As a result of deploying Cisco solutions, Rosen Hotels & Resorts has since experienced less network downtime, increased flexibility, and improved protection for remote users. Rosen Hotels & Resorts is looking to use Cisco solutions to expand its cloud footprint and move more systems from on-premises to the cloud.
